Looking for something off the typical tourist track? This is the tour for you!
It’s time to jump in a super jeep, strap on your crampons and step onto the mighty Myrdalsjokull glacier.
Mother Nature has really outdone herself with this one, the movie-like surroundings and glaciers are everywhere you look. Grandiose ice walls tower over you as you walk among them to enter the magical blue and black ice dome of the outlet glacier named after the powerful volcano Katla. Prepare to have your breath taken away!
Mýrdalsjökull glacier is one of the best-known in Iceland- from which the alluring Kötlujökull glacier originates. Kötlujökull is named after the robust Icelandic Volcano Katla, which is covered by the glacier. As the enormous mass of ice has been slowly crawling down from the volcano-mountain, it creates in some of Iceland’s most impressive natural ice caves. On this exhilarating Super Jeep tour, you will get to explore the wonders of this stunning natural phenomenon. You will see why as soon as you step in!
We will come to a stop near the roots of Kötlujökull glacier and the view that greets us is otherworldly. We will take on our crampons and helmets, and take a short walk to the opening of the ice cave. We might need to climb a few steps on ladders to the entrance of the cave. As the natural ice cave is in a constant change, conditions can be different at each tour. The climb is, however, not difficult at all and anyone in an average physical condition should be able to climb these steps. It might look adventurous but it is not demanding at all!
Beautiful layers of different colored ice and volcanic ash unfold from the ice as we come closer to the cave, painting impressive stripes in the glacier. Your guide will tell you all about the history of the glacier, the ice cave and the area around it making the tour educating and exciting all at once.

What should I wear for glacier tours?
Weather in Iceland is very unpredictable. For tours during winter: warm clothing as first layer, waterproof outdoor jacket and pants, hiking boots with high ankle protection, a hat and gloves are ideal. For tours during summer, bringing a light rain jacket and pants is in most cases enough protection. Icelanders often say, “If you don’t like the weather, just wait 5 minutes”. Jeans are not recommended for outdoor trips as they become very heavy and cold when they get wet.
Do I need hiking boots?
We encourage bringing hiking boots for glacier tours. They have to have hard on the sole and be tight around the ankle. You have the option to rent hiking boots for our Katla Ice Cave Tour during the booking process for 1500isk per pair.
How difficult are glacier hikes?
Our tours are considered to be safe for anyone in good physical condition. You have to be able to walk for about an hour up and down on slopes and uneven surface. Longer tours will be more challenging in endurance for some areas of the glacier. We also recommend you remember that we offer all the safety equipment necessary and you will be hiking with a professional and certified glacier guide.
How does weather affect my tour?
Wind and rain are common in Iceland, in addition to snow in the winter, but we do not let challenging weather stop us from going out and enjoy nature. All we need to do is choose our clothing wisely, which is why we recommend wearing waterproof jacket and pants as the second layer. Of course, safety is our #1 priority, in case of extreme weather or road conditions, we will cancel our tours and do our best to reschedule your booking at a further date or provide a full refund.
